Roos Makes 19 Saves in Double Overtime Defeat

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra field hockey goalkeeper Pieke Roos made an eye-popping 19 saves on a cloudy Saturday from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium, but it was visiting Drexel who came away with a win in Coastal Athletic Association play as the Dragons were victorious in a 2-1 double overtime contest against the Pride.

A sophomore from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Roos' 19 saves are the most by a Hofstra goalkeeper this season, and they are the most saves in a single game by a Hofstra goalie since Katiyn De Turo totaled 19 stops against William & Mary in 2013.

Hofstra's record moves to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in CAA action. The win improves Drexel to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Drexel's Eline Di Leva got the Dragons on the board towards the tail-end of the first quarter. With under one minute remaining in the quarter, Di Leva collected a tipped pass along the sideline and she manuevered herself into the Hofstra shooting arc. Facing a one-on-one opportunity with Roos as Hofstra defenders swarmed Di Leva, the Drexel attacker lifted her shot over a sliding Roos and in off the roof of the goal with 35 seconds remaining.

Despite Drexel having the majority of the shots in the contest, the Pride refused to back down. Just under four minutes into the start of the fourth quarter, Hofstra would find the equalizing goal. After Gabriela Espinoza pounced on a loose ball near the sideline, the senior captain drove at the Drexel backline before sending a hopeful pass into the Drexel shooting arc. Cami Valor latched on to the difficult pass and cracked a backhanded shot past the leg of Dragons goalkeeper Megan Hadfield for the tying goal at the 10:15 mark of the quarter.

After a scoreless, shot-less overtime period, Drexel increased its offensive pressure against the Pride in the second overtime period, totaling 10 shots against Roos and the home side. The sophomore netminder stood her ground throughout the action, making six saves against the Dragons. With 17 seconds before the shootout period, the Dragons found the winner from the stick of Di Leva. Roos made the initial save to deny Di Leva, but the rebound fell to Di Leva for her second tally of the day, sending the Dragons home as the victors.

Jamie Mc Millan led the Pride with three total shots against Drexel, while her and Valor each had two shots on frame.

Hadfield made three saves for the Dragons in the double overtime win. Di Leva finished the game with nine shots – all on goal – and Val Van Hellemont took seven saves for Drexel.

Hofstra faces a quick turnaround when it hosts Maine on Sunday at noon.
