Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra field hockey team took on Maine for its second game in 24 hours, falling 4-1 to the visiting Black Bears on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Hofstra's record slips to 4-6 overall, and Maine improves to 5-6 on the year.
The Black Bears opened the scoring on the first penalty corner opportunity of the game two minutes into the first quarter, with Kate Richardson's shot finding the back of the net for the guests. Hofstra evened the score seven minutes later in the quarter when
Silvia Vetter redirected a shot on target from
Samantha Spera into the goal, but Maine retook the lead with 2:22 remaining in the quarter off the stick of Brynn Dzengelewski.
Richardson scored her second of the day for the Black Bears with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, and Bhreagh Kennedy tallied the fourth and final goal for the visitors early in the fourth quarter.
Fresh off her 19 save outing against Drexel the previous day,
Pieke Roos recorded nine stops against the Black Bears in her sixth start of 2023. Spera, Vetter, and
Jamie Mc Millan all tied for the team lead with two shots against Maine, with Mc Millan and Vetter totaling two shots on goal each.
Mallory Drayer picked up four saves in the win for Maine. Mallory Mackesy took 12 shots for the visitors, with eight shots on target.
Hofstra resumes CAA action next Friday, October 6, with a 6 p.m. contest at William & Mary. Hofstra's next home game is on October 13 at 3 p.m. versus Towson.
