No. 19 Hofstra Gets Past Binghamton

Hempstead, NY - Bjorn van Gorkom scored his first career goal in the 21st minute and No. 19 Hofstra would keep Binghamton off the scoreboard as the Pride took a 1-0 victory over the Bearcats Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win extended the Pride's winning streak to three games and their unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).

Hofstra moved to 7-1-2 overall with the victory, while Binghamton dropped to 2-6-1 on the season. The shutout was Hofstra's fifth of the season.

The lone goal of the game came off a set piece as Eliot Goldthorp sent a corner kick to the far post where van Gorkam was unmarked. The graduate student from The Netherlands leapt and sent a header past keeper Jack Root for the goal.

Hofstra dominated play in the first half with a 9-1 shot advantage and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. But the Bearcats upped their play in the second half and held Hofstra to just one shot while getting six of their own. Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel was up to the task though and saved the only two shots on goal for the clean sheet.

Hofstra will return to action Saturday night on the road at Elon in a rematch of the 2022 CAA Championship game that was won by Hofstra. Game time in North Carolina is set for 7:30 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 5-1-1 all-time versus Binghamton.
-Speel has 21 career shutouts and is two shy of the program record.
-Goldthorp notched his team-leading fifth assist.
-Binghamton had what would have been the tying goal waved off for an offsides call in the second half.
