Carmichael's Brace Carries No. 24 Hofstra Past William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - Ryan Carmichael, the leading active scorer in NCAA Division I, notched both Hofstra goals, including the game-winner with 3:28 to play, as the 24th-ranked Pride picked up a 2-1 Coastal Athletic Association victory over William & Mary Saturday night at a rainy Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The victory extended Hofstra's unbeaten streak to seven games.

Hofstra improved to 6-1-2 on the season and 1-0-2 in CAA play. William & Mary dipped to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2 in league action.

The teams played a scoreless first half, though Hofstra was the aggressor in the opening 45 minutes with eight shots and five corner kicks. However, it was not until 15 minutes elapsed in the second half that the Pride would break through on the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Wessel Spel started the play with a long kick on a clear attempt that Carmichael ran down just outside the William & Mary 18-yard box. As keeper Cole McNally made a run for the ball, Carmichael was able to lift a shot over him on the run for his sixth goal of the season.

William & Mary was able to tie the game just over seven minutes later as Ian Krajna came in on Speel who charged out of the goal to make a play on the ball. The ball somehow came free and found its way back to Krajna, who turned and put a shot into an empty net.

The score remained 1-1 until the waning minutes when Eliot Goldthorp sent a brilliant pass to Carmichael, who finished for his team-best seventh goal of the season and second game-winner.

Speel finished with three saves for the Pride, while McNally stopped six shots for the Tribe.

Hofstra will have a quick turnaround as its next game is Tuesday night at home against Binghamton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with the contest airing on the MSG2 channel in addition to FloFC.
