Hofstra Uses Second Half Outburst To Down LIU

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored three second half goals and Wessel Speel made four saves in the final 45 minutes as the Pride picked up a 3-0 victory over LIU Tuesday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Eliot Goldthorp, Ryan Carmichael, and Teddy Baker each scored for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 5-1-2 on the season and extended its unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). LIU slipped to 3-4-1 with the loss.

The teams played a scoreless first half with the LIU defense limiting the Pride to just two shots. The Sharks generated some offensive chances but put just one of six first-half shots on target with Speel coming up with a big save.

Hofstra came out more aggressive in the second half and finally broke through at the 55:45 mark as Oliver Svalander sent a long cross into the box that Goldthorp slid past LIU keeper Jonathan Villacis for a 1-0 lead. The Pride doubled up the lead at 68:07 when Carmichael netted his fifth of the season with Roc Carles and Baker getting assists. Carles started the play at midfield with a header to Baker. The junior chipped it ahead to Carmichael, who got behind the defense and sent a shot past a charging Villacis. Carmichael and Baker would connect 45 seconds later as Carmichael whipped a cross to the far post that a diving Bakr headed in for his second goal of the season.

The Sharks outshot the Pride in the second half as well, 9-6, but Speel was up to the task as he stopped all four shots on goal for his 20th career shutout.

Hofstra will be back in action Saturday at 5 p.m., when it hosts William & Mary in a Coastal Athletic Association game.
