Hofstra Gets Past Providence

Providence, RI - Ryan Carmichael had a goal and an assist to lead Hofstra past Providence, 4-2, Friday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Hofstra took the lead for good early in the second half on an own goal before Carmichael iced it with a goal in the 86th minute.

Hofstra moved to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while the Friars slipped to 1-2 with the loss.

The Pride did not waste any time as Teddy Baker scored his first Hofstra goal just 16 seconds into the match, rocketing a shot into the upper right corner with Carmichael getting credit for an assist. Just over 20 minutes later, Albert Kang headed in a precise pass from Eoin Farrell to make it 2-0. The goal was Kang's first at Hofstra as well.

Providence got on the board with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening 45 with Pearce O'Brien converting a pass from Miguel Candela to cut the Pride's lead in half. The Friars would tie the game just over a minute into the second half as Nathan Messer put home a Michael Varley pass.

Hofstra was the beneficiary of some luck just 2:30 later as Providence keeper Lukas Burns saved a Pride shot, but the rebound caromed off the foot of a Friar defender for an own goal that gave the Pride the lead for good at the 48:56 mark.

Carmichael would stamp out any hopes of a Providence comeback as he was on the receiving end of a long pass from Pierce Infuso and ripped a shot past Burns for a 4-2 lead.

Burns finished with four saves for the Friars, while Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel made just one as the Friars put just three of their 22 shots on target.

Hofstra returns home to host Penn Monday night at 7 p.m. The game will be preceded by a Block Party outside the stadium gates beginning at 5 and will be followed by Fireworks by Grucci. Admission is free of charge.
