Hofstra Shuts Out Penn In Defensive Battle

Hempstead, NY - Gabriel Pacheco scored a set piece goal 6:44 into the game and both defenses limited offensive opportunities as Hofstra scored a 1-0 victory over Penn Monday night in front of a capacity crowd of 1,600 fans at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The game capped off Hofstra Soccer Opening Weekend with a pregame block party and postgame fireworks show.

Hofstra moved to 3-1 on the season with its second consecutive victory. Penn, which was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, slipped to 0-2.

Pacheco scored his first Hofstra goal following a corner kick from Eliot Goldthorp that was flicked on by the head of Ryan Carmichael. The pass went to Pacheco at the back post, who headed it in for the game's only goal. Hofstra had one other solid chance in the second half but Penn keeper Nick Christoffersen made an outstanding save on a shot from Carmichael for his lone save of the evening.

Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel made three saves including one on a long shot from Stas Korzeniowski. Penn had a late flurry as time winded down in the second half but could not get a shot off before the final horn sounded.

Hofstra will be back in action Saturday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Stony Brook in the Pride's Coastal Athletic Association opener.
