Harrington's Tie-Breaking Double In Ninth Lifts Hofstra To Series Sweep Of UMass Lowell

Lowell, MA - Steve Harrington's two-run double in the top of the ninth inning snapped a 4-4 tie as Hofstra went on to post a 7-5 victory over UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park to complete a three-game sweep. Harrington also had a two-run home run in the first inning and finished 2-5 with four RBIs.

Hofstra moved to 26-24 on the season, while the River Hawks dipped to 17-31.

John Mikolaicyk, the third of four Hofstra pitchers, picked up the win following a scoreless eighth inning to move to 1-5 on the season. Michael O'Hanlon gave up a run in the ninth as he notched his sixth save of the season.

The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Harrington's team-best seventh home run of the season. The River Hawks cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on a Jacob Humphrey RBI single. UMass Lowell would score two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 4-2 lead. It was their first lead of the series.

However, Hofstra knotted the score at four on RBI singles from Anthony D'Onofrio and Zach Bailey. The score would remain that way until the ninth when Santino Rosso walked and Kevin Bruggeman was hit by a pitch. Harrington followed with a double to center field to score both. Later in the inning, pinch runner Frankie DiMartino scored on a steal of home to close out the Pride's scoring.

In the bottom of the ninth, O'Hanlon retired the first two batters before a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single from Humphrey.made it a two-run game. The Pride's closer prevented any further damage by getting a fly out to end the game.

Hofstra had another outstanding day at the plate with 14 hits. Rosso led the way with three, while Harrington, Ryan Morash, D'Onofrio, and Sammy Burman each had two.

Humphrey was 4-4 with three RBIs for the River Hawks. Reliever Michael Simes (2-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in 1 ⅓ innings.

Hofstra will be back in action Friday when it hosts Elon in a doubleheader at Noon to begin its final regular season series. The Pride is still in contention for a Colonial Athletic Championship berth going into the final weekend.
