Hofstra Drops Doubleheader To Elon

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Elon Friday afternoon at University Field. The Phoenix won game one, 5-2, and took game two, 7-5. The losses eliminated the Pride from Colonial Athletic Association playoff contention.

Hofstra slipped to 26-26 overall and 13-15 in CAA play. Elon is 32-20 overall and 19-9 in league action.

In the opener, Elon jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. Tanner Holliman drove in the first run with a second inning safety squeeze. Justin Cassella had a two-run home run in the fourth, while Connor Coolahan added an RBI single later in the inning.

Zach Bailey hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to put the Pride on the board. Bailey finished with three hits in the game and was a triple short of the cycle. After Elon tacked on a run in the seventh on a James Broderick sacrifice fly, Kevin Bruggeman closed the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to left center.

Brad Camarda (6-3) took the loss for the Pride after allowing five runs on six hits over 7 â…“ innings. Shea Sprague (7-3) got the win for the Phoenix after allowing two runs on nine hits over seven-plus innings. Ben Simon went the final two innings for his seventh save.

In the nightcap, Elon scored five of its seven runs on three home runs and jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Pride rallied to get within two. In the second inning Ryan Sprock and Holliman homered back-to-back to put the Phoenix up by a 2-0 score. Cassella added his second home run of the day in the third inning, a three-run shot that made it 5-0. Elon would score a run on a double play in the fifth to make it a 6-0 game.

Hofstra showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third for Dylan Palmer, who delivered a two-run single to get the Pride on the scoreboard. Palmer had three hits in the game and five on the day. The Pride added two more runs in the sixth after loading the bases for Will Kennedy. The junior, who was playing in his first games since being injured on April 5, hit an infield single that allowed a pair of runs to score and make it a 6-4 game. 

The teams traded runs in the seventh inning as Sprock doubled in a run in the top half and the Pride scored on a double play in the bottom. Hofstra would get the tying runs on base in the eighth and the tying run to the plate in the ninth but could not come up with the big hit. 

Justin Mitrovich (6-40 claimed the win for Elon after a two-run, three-hit performance over five innings of work. Liam Dabagian three three innings, allowing an unearned run, to notch his second save.

Mark Faello (6-7) took the loss allowing five runs on five hits in three innings of work. Danny Kelleher pitched 1 â…” innings before Michael O'Hanlon went the final 4 â…“.

The teams are scheduled to finish the series with a single game at 12 p.m. Saturday. The Pride will celebrate senior day in a pregame ceremony beginning at 11:20 a.m.

Notes:
-Anthony D'Onofrio had a three-hit game in the opener.
-John Mikolaicyk pitched 1 ⅔ hitless and scoreless innings in game one with three strikeouts. 
-O'Hanlon had a career-best seven strikeouts in his game two outing, which was a career-long in innings pitched. 
-Hofstra stranded 16 runners over the two games
-The Pride is 8-13 all-time against Elon.
