Hofstra Battles No. 9 Connecticut In Two-Run Loss

Storrs, CT - Ryan Morash had four hits to lead a 16-hit night for Hofstra, but ninth-ranked Connecticut rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and held off the Pride, 9-7, Wednesday night at Elliot Ballpark. The loss snapped Hofstra's three-game winning streak. Hofstra slipped to 23-24 with the loss, while the Huskies improved their record to 36-11.

The teams traded second inning runs before the Pride added three in the third to take a 4-1 advantage. Following back-to-back singles from Dylan Palmer and Santino Rosso to start the inning, Kevin Bruggeman reached on an error that sent Rosso to third and allowed Palmer to score. Steve Harrington followed with an RBI single and Morash capped the scoring with an infield single that drove in Bruggeman with the Pride's fourth run.

Connecticut got two runs back in the bottom of the frame and then took the lead for good in the fourth with another two runs. Korey Morton had a solo home run in the third and Dominic Freeberger added a sacrifice fly. Maddix Dalena knocked in both runs in the fourth with a double.

Hofstra would cut the deficit to one run, 6-5, in the sixth as Michael Florides doubled and came in to score on a double from Rosso. The Huskies would go back up by three, 8-5, before a two-run top of the eighth inning made it a one-run game once again. Bruggeman and Morash each had RBI singles. However, Connecticut scored an insurance run on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning and closer Justin Willis retired the Pride in order in the ninth for his eighth save.

In addition to Morash, Hofstra received multi-hit games from Harrington (3), Rosso (2), and Palmer (2). All nine Hofstra starters recorded hits in the game. John Mikolaicyk (0-5) started for the Pride and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits over four-plus innings of work.

Garrett Coe (6-2) picked up the win in relief after allowing a run on five hits over 3 ⅓ innings. Willis allowed one hit in notching the four out save. Dalena and Morton each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs for the Huskies.

Hofstra returns to action Friday night at Massachusetts-Lowell with a 7 p.m. first pitch.
