Hempstead, NY - The University of Delaware used big third quarter to rally for 13-10 win over the Hofstra women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The loss overshadowed a huge day from the Pride's
Taylor Mennella, who had eight points on five goals and three assists. The point total was a season-high and fell one point shy of her career-high.
The loss sends Hofstra's record to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Delaware improved to 6-6 and 2-2 in the league.
Hofstra held numerous two-goal leads early on, including at 5-3 nearing the end of the first half as
Katie Kelly scored off a feed from
Lauren Coletti. It was Hofstra's first goal from someone other than Mennella as she tallied the Pride's first four, including two straight to open the game.
The Pride would once again take a two-goal lead at 6-4 early in the third quarter before a 6-0 Delaware scoring run turned it into a 10-6 Blue Hen advantage.
Hofstra fought back and a 3-1 scoring run, including a goal from
Kerry Walser with 5:03 left, made it 12-10. The Pride was unable to overcome the deficit, though as the Blue Hens earned the road win.
Kelly finished with two goals and two draw controls for Hofstra, which also got a goal and an assist from
Megan Flannery.
Jackie Gatti posted four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Walser added four caused turnovers, two ground balls and a goal in the contest.
Lizzie Hsu led Delaware with four goals, while Danielle Livornese tallied three goals and eight draw controls.
Luchianna Cardello had a season-high 14 saves for the Pride, while Mercy McCarthy tallied eight for Delaware.
Hofstra is back in action when it travels to Elon next Saturday for a 12 p.m. contest.
