Hofstra Cannot Overcome Slow Start In Loss To Drexel

Hempstead, NY - Taylor Mennella had four goals for Hofstra, but the Pride could not overcome a slow start and fell to Drexel, 18-6, in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Dragons outscored the Pride, 10-1, in the first quarter.

Hofstra slipped to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the CAA with the loss. Drexel moved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in league action with its fourth consecutive victory.

The teams traded goals to start the game with Lindsey Dean scoring for Drexel on a free position shot 1:18 into the contest. Kerry Walser tied the game for the Pride off a pass from Katie Kelly at the 4:27 mark. Drexel would score the next nine goals with Dean, Corinne Bednarik, and Alex Wall netting two each. Dean also had three assists during the run.

The Pride scored all three goals in the second quarter, two by Mennella and one from Rachel Graff, to cut the halftime deficit to six at 10-4. However, Drexel outscored the Pride, 6-0, in the third quarter to lead 16-4. Mennella would add two more goals in the fourth quarter as the teams alternated scoring.

Drexel keeper Jenika Cuocco posted 12 saves and allowed four goals in 50:58 of playing time. Callan Fritsch played the final 9:02 and allowed a pair of goals with two saves. Bednarik led Drexel with five goals and added two assists for seven points. Dean had four goals and three assists, while Wall and Maddie Fowler contributed two goals each. Cuocco had four ground balls to pace the Dragons with Maura Cissel posting a team-high six draw controls. 

Luchianna Cardello made eight saves in goal for the Pride and also had three ground balls. Megan Flannery had three ground balls as well, while Katie Kelly and Courtney Carollo led the team with five draw controls each.

Hofstra is back in action next Friday night at Stony Brook with a 6:30 p.m. start time.

-Hofstra is 28-13 all-time vs. Drexel.
-Mannella has a team-best 30 goals on the season.
-Mannella has scored three or more goals in each of the last three games.
-Hofstra's six goals was a season-low.
-Hofstra honored 13 seniors - Carrollo, Lauren Colletti, Kate Fiola, Graff, Kelly, Margo McCormack, Ashlyn McDonald, Mennella, Caitlin Murphy, Kayla Robertson, Cara Scanio, Kendall Smith, and Sam Tarpey -  prior to the game as today marked the Pride's home finale.
