Hofstra Posts Wild Walk-Off Win Over Fairfield To End Perfect Home Stand

Hempstead, NY - Dylan Palmer scored on a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Hofstra an 11-10 victory over Fairfield Wednesday at University Field. The Stags had tied the game at 10 with two runs in the top of the inning.

Hofstra moved to 17-19 on the season with the win, its seventh consecutive victory. Fairfield slipped to 21-14 on the season.

It was a back-and-forth game as Hofstra overcame a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning. Jake Liberatore doubled down the right field line to score two runs and tie the score. Michael Florides drove in Hofstra's third run with a single, while Brian Morrell added an RBI single. Morrell drove in two more runs in the fourth inning to make it a 6-2 game.

Fairfield scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to cut the Hofstra lead to 6-5. Morrell came through again for the Pride with an RBI double in the sixth to drive in Palmer and give the Pride an insurance run.

The Stags scored three times in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead before Hofstra answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-8 lead. With runners on first and third, an errant pickoff throw at first allowed Palmer to score and sent Frankie DiMartino to third. Martino would score on a wild pitch, while Santino Ross singled in Steve Harrington for the third run.

Mike Becchetti tied the game in the top of the ninth with a two-out home run, setting the stage for a wild bottom of the ninth. Florides reached on a one-out single and went to second on a passed ball. Palmer walked and on a double steal attempt, Florides was out at third. Palmer would then steal third and before the next pitch, Fairfield pitcher Billy Fitzgerald was called for a balk by the home plate umpire to send Palmer in with the winning run.

Morrell finished the day with three hits and four RBIs. Florides had a four-hit game, while Ryan Morash had three hits. Palmer walked four times and scored three runs. Zach Bailey (1-0) picked up the win after pitching the final 1 ⅓ innings.
