Turner Carries Hofstra to Huge Road Win Over Drexel

Philadelphia, PA - Griffin Turner had a career-best five points on a career-high tying three goals and two assists to lead the Hofstra men's lacrosse team to a huge 8-7 road win over conference-leading Drexel on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field.

Mac Gates was enormous in goal for the Pride as well as he tallied 14 saves to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard.

Hofstra picked up its second conference win of the season to improve its record to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Drexel dropped to 7-4 and 4-1 in league action.

It was a strong first quarter for Hofstra as after Drexel got the scoring started, Ryan Sheridan started a 4-0 Pride run that culminated with an unassisted tally from Turner with 5:57 left in the opening stanza. The lead would be at two, 4-2, heading into the second quarter before Hofstra got a pair of goals from Matt Elder to make it a 6-2 lead at the break.

Drexel looked to close the gap and got the first two goals of the third quarter to make the score 6-4 before Turner stepped up once again and scored his 10th of the season to give the visitors a three-goal advantage with 13:56 left in regulation.

It would be an exciting final few minutes with Max Semple scoring for Drexel with 10:37 left to close the gap to one. Turner, in arguably the best performance of his career, would give the Pride some much-needed breathing room with his third of the day with 7:37 left.

Drexel was able to make it an 8-7 game in the final three minutes and had a couple opportunities in the waning moments, but the Pride defense held tight and Hofstra held on for the important victory.

Elder had his second hat trick of the season and third of his career to assist in the Pride's offensive efforts. Tim Hegarty was stellar on defense for Hofstra as he tallied career-highs in ground balls and caused turnovers with four and three, respectively. John Recher added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Jack Mulcahy had five points on four goals and one assist for the Dragons, which got 10 saves from Ross Blumenthal.

The Pride was nearly perfect on clears, going 17-18 in the contest.

Hofstra will play its final road game of the regular season next weekend when it travels to Hampton on April 22 for a 12 p.m. contest.
