Hofstra Rallies To Defeat Towson In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY - Kevin Bruggeman's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 10-10 tie and Steve Harrington followed with a two-run home run as Hofstra rallied to defeat Towson, 14-10, Friday in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field. The Pride scored eight runs over the seventh and eighth innings with five coming in the decisive eighth.

Hofstra (13-19, 7-9 CAA) stretched its win streak to three games with the win. Towson dropped to 10-24 overall and 2-11 in league play.

Hofstra spotted the Tigers six runs, trailing 6-0 after the top of the third inning. John Cristino had a solo home run in the second and added an RBI single in the third, while Elijah Dickerson had an RBI single in the second and a two-run double in the third.

Hofstra made it a two-run game with four runs in the bottom of the third. Bruggeman had a two-run double and Santino Rosso added a two run single in the inning. The Tigers and Pride each scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning with Dickerson driving in two more runs for Towson and Brian Morrell knocking in the Hofstra runs with a two-run home run to right center.

Hofstra would take a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh as Morrell had a sacrifice fly to make it 9-8. The tying and go-ahead runs would score on a Towson fielding error. The lead did not last long as Towson scored two runs in the eighth on a home run from Reyce Curnane.

The Pride came up in the bottom of the eighth and got a leadoff single from Anthony D'Onofrio. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and he took third on a flyout to right. Dylan Palmer, who was 4-4 with a walk, then tied the score with an infield single. A hit and run single from Morrell put runners on the corners for Bruggeman, who doubled into the left field corner to drive in both runners for a 12-10 Hofstra lead. Harrington then drove a pitch over the right field fence for additional insurance runs and a 14-10 lead.

Michael O'Hanlon (1-1), who came on in the eighth and got out of an inherited jam, needed just four pitches in the ninth to get a fly out, a pop out, and a groundout for his first victory of the season.

In addition to Palmer's four hits, Hofstra got three hits and three RBIs from Morrell, three hits and four RBIs from Bruggeman, three hits from D'Onofrio, and two hits apiece from Rosso and Michael Florides.

Curnane had four hits for Towson, while Dickerson had three hits and five RBIs. Cam Clark (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing three runs on three hits in 1 ⅓ innings.

The teams will resume the series Saturday at 12 p.m.
