Hofstra Offense Erupts In 17-5 Win Over St. John's

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored 11 runs in the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Brian Morrell, and went on to post a 17-5 victory over St. John's Tuesday afternoon at University Field. The Pride offense recorded 16 hits on the day and the 17 runs are a season-high.

The Pride won for the second consecutive game and improved to 12-19 on the season. St. John's, which was coming off a win over 19th-ranked Connecticut, slipped to 17-13 overall. 

Mark Faello (3-5) started for Hofstra and earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out four. A trio of relievers - Carlos Martinez, Sean Hamilton, and Steven Kaenzig - pitched an inning each. Martinez allowed a three-run home run in the seventh, while Hamilton pitched a perfect eighth and Kaenzig worked around a fielding error to pitch a scoreless ninth. 

Hofstra sent 15 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring 11 runs on eight hits. In addition to Morrell's grand slam, Zach Bailey drove in three runs in the inning with a walk and a two-run single. Ryan Morash had an RBI single, Michael Florides had an RBI single, Kevin Bruggeman added an RBI double, and Jake Liberatore contributed a sacrifice fly. 

Morrell finished the day 2-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Steve Harrington was 4-4 with an RBI and four runs scored, while Morash, Anthony D'Onofrio, and Florides each had two hits on the afternoon. 

Jackson Tucker had a three-run home run for St John's, while Jace Jeremiah went 3-4 with a run scored. Mario Pesca (1-5) started for the Red Storm and took the loss after allowing 11 runs on eight hits over 1 ⅓ innings of work. 

Hofstra returns to conference play Friday when it opens a three-game series at home against Towson. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra moved to 8-3 at home.
-Hofstra snapped a eight-game losing streak against St. John's and moved to 12-65 all-time against the Red Storm.
-The 17 runs are the second-highest total Hofstra has scored against St. John's. The team put up 20 in a game on two occasions.
-The grand slam by Morrell was Hofstra's first of the season.
-Harrington extended his on-base streak to 24 games. 
-Bruggeman's double was his 13th of the season.
