Heartbreaker; Hofstra Falls In Overtime To Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ - Katie Kelly had a career day with six points on five goals and one assist, while also adding nine draw controls, but the Hofstra women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking overtime 17-16 decision to Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium.

The goal total tied Kelly's career-high and the draw control total established a new career-high for her. Courtney Carollo had an incredible 10 draw controls to pace the Pride in that category.

The loss dropped Hofstra's record to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Monmouth improved to 8-5 and 2-1 in the league.

Despite getting on the scoreboard first, Hofstra would fall behind 3-1 after five minutes of action. Kelly would close the gap to 5-4 with 4:17 left in a high-scoring first quarter before Monmouth pushed the lead to 9-4 with four straight goals overlapping the two quarters. A goal from Lauren Coletti ended the Hawks run and after Monmouth regained a five-goal advantage, the Pride roared back.

Kelly would kick-start a 5-0 Pride scoring run that finished early in the third quarter. The Pride trailed by one at the break before Rachel Graff tied the score for Hofstra off an assist from Taylor Mennella at the 9:41 mark of the third quarter.

The Hawks looked to take control and scored the game's next three goals, making another Pride comeback necessary. Down 13-10 early in the fourth quarter, Graff, Kelly (2), Walser, and Mennella scored during a 5-1 run that made it 15-14 Hofstra following a goal from Mennella. The back and forth game, and another high-scoring quarter, would see Walser put Hofstra up 16-15 with 61 seconds left but Monmouth was able to send the game into overtime with a free-position goal with 12 ticks left. Cassidy Orban would end the game and give the Hawks the win with an unassisted tally at the 4:51 mark of the first overtime.

Trinity Reed had a team-high five ground balls for the Pride, which also got four points (2G, 2A) from Mennella. Graff finished with a career-high tying three goals and four points in the game, while Walser had three goals and an assist in the game.

Ella Spears had six points on four goals and two assists for Monmouth, which also got five points on a goal and four assists from Mya Brock.

Hofstra is back in action on Saturday, April 8, when it hosts Delaware at 12 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com.
