Hofstra Holds Off Stony Brook In Saturday Slugfest

Hempstead, NY - Kevin Bruggeman went 4-5 with three doubles, a home run, three runs, and three RBIs as Hofstra defeated Stony Brook, 10-8, in a Colonial Athletic Association slugfest at University Field Saturday afternoon. Hofstra also received home runs from Brian Morrell and Steve Harrington. Hofstra held off a late rally from the Seawolves to even the series at one game apiece.

The Pride moved to 9-16 overall and 4-7 in CAA play with the win. Stony Brook dipped to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in league action.

Hofstra led 4-3 after the fourth inning before scoring twice in the fifth on solo home runs from Bruggeman and Harrington. After Stony Brook got a run back in the top of the sixth, the Pride scored four times in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 10-4. Will Kennedy had an RBI single, Bruggeman added an RBI double, and Morrell drilled a two-run home run to straight away centerfield to cap the scoring.

The Pride did have to sweat a bit as the Seawolves scored twice in the seventh on a Brett Paulsen home run and twice in the eighth on a balk and a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game. Hofstra closer Michael O'Hanlon, who gave up a pair of runs in the eighth, shut the door in the ninth with a flyout, a lineout, and a strikeout to end the game.

Mark Faello (2-5) was credited with the win in relief of starter Tristan Nemjo. Faello went three innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Nemjo, who was making his first start of the season, allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over four innings of work.

In addition to the offensive exploits of Bruggeman, Harrington (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBIs), and Morrell (1-4, 2 RBIs), the Pride got two hits, two runs, and two RBIs from Kennedy as well as an RBI single from Anthony D'Onofrio

Shane Paradine had three hits and two RBIs for the Seawolves, while Paulsen finished with three RBIs on the day. Starter Jared Bellissimo (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over 3 ⅔ innings.

The teams conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
