Hofstra Drops 11-7 Decision At St. John's

Queens, NY - Steve Harrington and Ryan Morash each had two hits and an RBI, and Dylan Palmer and Will Kennedy each scored two runs in Hofstra's 11-7 loss at St. John's Wednesday evening. The Red Storm overcame a 2-0 first inning deficit and thwarted a late Hofstra rally to take the win in their home opener at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Pride scored two runs in the ninth inning and left two runners on base in their comeback attempt.

St. John's improved to 7-4 on the season with the win, while Hofstra dropped to 3-8 with the loss.

Hofstra scored twice in the first inning as Palmer led off with a walk and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. After a groundout sent him to third, the freshman infielder would score on a passed ball. Kennedy would then walk and score all the way from first on a double to the left field corner by Harrington.

The Red Storm scored two runs in the second to tie the score and then went ahead in the third on an RBI single from Marty Higgins. St. John's added two more runs in the fourth before the Pride scored on a two-out RBI single from Kennedy in the top of the fifth that chased home Michael Florides, who had led off the inning with a single, to make it a 5-3 game.

St. John's pulled away in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. Paul Orbon had an RBI double and David Glancy added an RBI single in the inning. Hofstra was able to take advantage of some shaky relief pitching in the eighth as three walks and two wild pitches led to a pair of runs to make it an 8-5 game.

Higgins got the runs back for St. John's in the bottom of the eighth as his two-run triple gave the Red Storm a 10-5 lead. He would then score on a sacrifice fly to close out the St. John's scoring.

The Pride would not go quietly in the ninth as Morash doubled in a run and then came in to score on a Jake Liberatore groundout. The Red Storm were forced to go to Nick Cirelli in what became a save situation and the Red Storm closer got the final two outs for his second save of the season.

Cade Henry took the loss for Hofstra and slipped to 0-3 after allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings.

Ben Adams (1-0) earned the win in relief for St. John's, throwing a perfect 1 ⅓ innings. Higgins finished the day 3-5 with four RBIs to pace the Red Storm offense.

Hofstra will return to action Friday at Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association opener. Game time in Newark, Delaware is set for 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Kennedy extended his hitting streak to eight games
-Steven Kaenzig, Michael O'Hanlon and Garrett Sullivan combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
-The teams combined to leave 18 runners on base.
