Hofstra Rally Falls Short Versus Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra cut a 7-3 deficit to one, 7-6, in the eighth inning before Stony Brook tacked on a run in the ninth and held on for an 8-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory at University Field Friday afternoon.

The Seawolves improved to 10-13 overall and 3-4 in the CAA with the win. Hofstra slipped to 8-16 overall and 3-7 in league play.

The team stranded first inning runs as Evan Giordano homered for the Seawolves before Dylan Palmer led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a Santino Rosso groundout. Stony Brook would get a solo home run from Ryan Micheli in the third and an RBI single from Johnny Pilla in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Pride made it a 3-2 game in the fifth as Brian Morrell and Michael Florides walked. Palmer followed with a bunt single that was thrown away, allowing Morrell to come home. Following a Shane Paradine solo home run in the sixth, the Pride answered with a Steve Harington sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 score.

Stony Brook seemingly broke the game open in the seventh with three runs coming in on a bases-loaded double off the bat of Paradine. However, the Pride stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Anthony D'Onofrio doubling in a run and Florides driving one in with an infield out. That made it a 7-5 game and Harington cut the Stony Brook lead to one with a solo blast to right in the eighth inning. But in the top of the ninth, Giordano reached on a one-out single and moved to second on an out before Matt Brown-Eiring knocked him in with a double to the fence in right for a much needed insurance run.

Harrington finished the day 1-3 with two RBIs, while Palmer had a pair of hits and a run scored. Cade Henry (1-4) started and took the loss for the Pride after allowing five runs on six hits over a career-best 6 ⅔ innings.

Ben Fero (2-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings. Josh O'Neil went the final three innings for his first save, allowing three runs on three hits. Paradine was 3-4 with four RBIs on the day. Giordano had a pair of hits and scored three runs.

The teams continue the series Saturday with the game tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. Rain is forecasted and a decision on playing and/or moving the game time will be made Saturday morning.
