Hofstra Drops Overtime Thriller To Connecticut

Hempstead, NY - Katie Kelly had a career-high five goals and added one assist, but Connecticut scored with 2:36 left in the first overtime to earn a 14-13 win over the Hofstra women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. Rachel Graff added four points on three goals and an assist in the contest for the Pride.

The hat trick was Kelly's second this season and second of her career and was Graff's third this season with Hofstra.

The Pride fell to 3-8 with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 6-3 with the victory.

Hofstra battled all afternoon, overcoming multiple deficits to eventually send the game to overtime.

In the first quarter, goals from Kelly and Kerry Walser put the Pride in front early, 2-0. Back-to-back goals later in the quarter from Taylor Mennella and Graff gave Hofstra a 5-4 lead before Connecticut used a 4-0 scoring run to open up an 8-5 lead with 7:15 left before halftime.

A goal from Kelly with three seconds left before halftime closed the gap to two, 10-8, and the Pride got a tally from Graff to open the second stanza to make it a one-goal game.

The Huskies would hold a 12-10 lead in the third quarter before the Pride mounted its biggest and most important rally of the game. Kelly would score twice and Graff added the third during a pivotal 3-0 Hofstra scoring run that put the Pride in front, 13-12, with 6:55 left in regulation.

Connecticut would tie the score just over a minute later on a goal from Susan Lafountain and the game would head to overtime knotted at 13. After a scoreless first three-plus minutes of overtime, Grace Coon would give the visitors the win as she scored off a feed from Lafountain with 2:36 showing on the clock.

Walser had a career and game-high seven draw controls for the Pride, while also adding two points (1G, 1A) and a pair of ground balls. Courtney Carollo tallied six draw controls for Hofstra, while Trinity Reed had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Mennella had four points on two goals and two assists for the Pride.

Coon had five points on three goals and two assists for Connecticut, which also got four goals and one assist from Lafountain.

Landyn White had 16 saves for the Huskies, while Luchianna Cardello tallied 10 for the Pride.

Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. game. That contest will air on FloLive.
