Hofstra Battles No. 24 West Virginia, Falls In 10 Innings

Morgantown, WV - The 24th-ranked Mountaineers of West Virginia rallied for a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and then won the game on Sam White's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 6-5 victory over visiting Hofstra Wednesday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Hofstra saw its modest two-game winning streak halted as the Pride slipped to 7-13 on the season. The Mountaineers improved to 16-5.

For the second game in a row, the Mountaineers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. White had a two-run single for West Virginia to account for the two runs.

Hofstra rallied in the third as Nick Marrero reached on an infield single and Zach Bailey followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, Dylan Palmer had a two-run single to tie the score at two.

The Mountaineers snapped the tie with a run in the fourth with three consecutive hits as an RBI single from Logan Suave plated the go-ahead run. The lead was short-lived as Hofstra came back with a run in the fifth as Michael Florides drew a two-out walk, stole second, and came home on a single from Ryan Morash

West Virginia took a 4-3 lead in the sixth, loading the bases with one out before scoring on a Tristan Nemjo wild pitch. Nemjo was able to escape without further damage. Hofstra took the lead for the first time in the top of the eighth as Kevin Bruggeman blasted a two-run home run to left field to score Will Kennedy, who had walked.

The Hofstra lead did not last long as West Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the inning as JJ Wetherholt singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Neither team would score in the ninth, and in the 10th, Mark Faello (1-4) came on and retired the first two batters before giving up a double to Caleb McNeely and the single to White that drove in the winning run.

Marrero had two of Hofstra's five hits as he added a double to his infield single. Palmer, Morash and Bruggeman had the other hits for the Pride.

White finished the day with three hits and three RBIs for West Virginia. Keegan Allen (1-0), the last of four Mountaineer pitchers, picked up the win after throwing two perfect innings.

Hofstra returns to action Friday in the first game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at North Carolina A&T. First pitch in Greensboro, North Carolina is set for 6 p.m.
