Hofstra Upends No. 24 West Virginia

Morgantown, WV - Cade Henry allowed two runs over five innings and three Pride relievers combined to allow one hit over four scoreless frames as Hofstra upended No. 24 West Virginia Tuesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. The win was Hofstra's first over a nationally-ranked team since defeating Miami (FL), 5-0, on May 8, 2011.

Hofstra, which won for the second game in a row, improved to 7-12 on the season. West Virginia saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end and slipped to 15-5.

Hofstra spotted the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead in the first as West Virginia got a leadoff double, an RBI single from J.J. Wetherholt, and an RBI groundout from Dayne Leonard to grab the early lead.

The Pride cut the deficit in half in the third as Michael Florides reached on a two-out infield single and came in to score on a RBI single from Dylan Palmer. Hofstra would tie the score in the fourth inning as Ryan Morash led off with a double and came around to score on a double from Brian Morrell.

A two-run sixth inning gave the Pride the lead as Will Kennedy singled with two outs to start the rally. A walk to Morrell put runners on first and second, and Kevin Bruggeman followed with a single that drove in Kennedy and sent Morrell to third. A throwing error on the play then allowed Morrell to come in to extend the lead to 4-2.

West Virginia threatened in the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs, but Mike McKenna got a comebacker to escape the jam. The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against Hofstra closer Michael O'Hanlon. However, the junior was able to escape the jam with a swinging strikeout to end the game on a 3-2 pitch and earn his third save of the season.

Henry (1-3) picked up his first win in a Hofstra uniform as the junior transfer allowed five hits and struck out four batters. Steven Kaenzig pitched 1 ⅔ innings without allowing a hit, followed by 1 ⅓ innings from McKenna before O'Hanlon worked the ninth.

Florides had two hits for the Pride, which received at least one hit from eight of their nine starters.

West Virginia starter Aidan Major (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings.

The teams conclude their two-game series Wednesday at 3 p.m.
