Hofstra Set For 2023 EIWA Championships

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University wrestling team is set for the 2023 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships, which get underway Saturday, March 4 at The Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The event concludes Sunday, March 5.

A total of 45 automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, are up for grabs at the EIWA Championships, as well as the overall team title and individual championships, in the 119th edition of the competition.

The action gets underway Saturday at 10:30 a.m. beginning with the preliminary round, followed by the round of 16 and consolation first round matches at 10:50 a.m. The quarterfinal round and second round consolation matches will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the third round consolation matches will start at 7:30 p.m. Sunday's wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. with the semifinals and quarterfinal consolation matches, while the consolation semifinals and seventh-place matches begin at 12:30 p.m.. The finals, featuring first, third, and fifth-place matches, get underway at 4:45 p.m.

Hofstra was 5-6 overall this past season and 2-6 in EIWA duals. The Pride will have a wrestler compete at each weight class in the EIWA's with Jacob Moon at 125 pounds, Chase Liardi at 133 pounds, Justin Hoyle at 141 pounds, Michael Leandrou at 14 9 pounds, Joe McGinty at 157 pounds, Matt Rogers at 165 pounds, Ross McFarland at 174 pounds, Jacob Ferreira at 184 pounds, Trey Rogers at 197 pounds, and Zachary Knighton-Ward at 285 pounds. In pre-seeding, Hoyle (9), McFarland (10), Ferreira (4), Rogers (5), and Knighton-Ward (8) earned top 10 spots. 

In addition to their pre-seeds, Ferreira, Rogers, and Knighton-Ward appear in various national rankings. Ferreira is 12th in the NCAA RPI, 24th in the coach's poll, 26th in the InterMat rankings, 28th in the WrestleStat rankings, and an honorable mention selection by FloWrestling. Rogers is 22nd in the NCAA RPI, 29th in the coach's poll, 28th in the InterMat and WrestleStat rankings, and an honorable mention pick by FloWrestling. Knighton-Ward is 31st in the NCAA RPI rankings. 

Knighton-Ward has been a three-time place-winner and NCAA qualifier, while Rogers has earned one spot on the podium (5th in 2021) and one NCAA berth. Hoyle placed eighth for the Pride last season.
