Thomas Records 1,000th Rebound; Hofstra Rolls to Double-Digit Win Over Hampton

Hampton, VA – Behind career outings from Sorelle Ineza and Zyheima Swint, plus Brandy Thomas eclipsing 1,000 rebounds for her career, the Hofstra women's basketball team earned a 72-58 Colonial Athletic Association win over Hampton from the Hampton University Convocation Center.
 
Hofstra improves to 10-18 overall and 4-13 in the CAA with Thursday night's win, snapping a five-game losing streak for the Pride. Hampton drops to 10-17 overall and 7-10 in the conference following the loss.
 
Ineza set a new career-high with 24 points on 9-16 shooting from the floor, and Swint posted 14 points and 14 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Thomas led all players in Thursday's game with 15 rebounds while scoring 10 points, and Emma Von Essen finished with 11 points.
 
After Ineza opened the contest with a floating hook shot, the Lady Pirates jumped in front with six unanswered points to lead by four at the 7:34 mark of the first quarter. Von Essen closed the gap to two points with a fast-break layup, but Hampton rattled off a 6-1 run midway through the first quarter to lead 12-5 with 2:27 to play in the period. The Pride went on a 6-2 run lasting the remainder of the quarter, with four points from Ineza and two from Swint, to trail 14-11.
 
The Pride outscored Hampton, 30-19, in the second quarter. After a Lady Pirate free throw at 9:46, Hofstra took a one-point lead behind a Thomas layup and a Von Essen three before Hampton retook the lead with a quick two-pointer. The Pride pulled in front for good with a pair of Thomas free throws at 8:05, and the lead grew to five with a 5-1 run. Hampton pulled to within one with four straight points, but Alarice Gooden converted a second-chance layup to put Hofstra back ahead by three with 4:02 to play. The Pride put its lead back to five with four of the next six points before Hampton once again made it a one-point game with a 6-2 run lasting until a Maniya Custis layup at 2:09 made it a three-point Hofstra lead. Hampton tied the score with a layup and free throw from Dlayla Chakolis at 1:36, but the Pride ended the second quarter with eight unanswered points to lead, 41-33, going into the break.
 
The Pride took control of the game with a 10-2 run to open the third quarter and increase its lead over Hampton 16 with 4:44 left in the quarter, with five points from Ineza, two from Swint, and two from Thomas. Hampton cut the deficit to 11 with a 7-2 run lasting 2:26, but Hofstra closed out the quarter with thee Swint points to lead, 58-44, after three.

Hampton opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to make it an eight-point game with 5:48 to go in the contest, but a three from Von Essen halted any thoughts of a late Hampton comeback while simultaneously kicking off a 9-0 Pride run to give the visitors a 17-point lead late in the quarter. The Lady Pirates never got as close as 13 points for the remainder of the quarter as the Pride earned its biggest win over a Division I opponent this season.
 
Nylah Young led the Lady Pirates with in scoring and rebounding with 22 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Pride concludes the 2022-23 regular season on Saturday, March 4, with a short trip to Williamsburg, Virginia to take on William & Mary (16-12, 11-6 CAA). Tip-off against the Tribe is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
NOTES:
-The all-time series between Hofstra and Hampton is now tied at 1-1.
-Hofstra held Hampton to 0-10 from three-point range. It's the second time in three games Hofstra has held an opponent to zero three-point field goals.
-The 30 points scored in the second quarter were the most points Hofstra scored in a quarter this season.
-This marks the first time since December 3 against LIU that Hofstra finished with more than 70 points in a game.
-Hofstra recorded a season-high shooting percentage of 56.3-percent against the Lady Pirates.
