Williamsburg, VA –
Zyheima Swint scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double, but the Hofstra women's basketball team fell in a 69-50 defeat to William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association action from Kaplan Arena.
Hofstra ends the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and a 4-14 mark in CAA competition, and William & Mary moves to 17-12 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
In addition to her double-double, Swint recorded two assists, one steal, and one block.
Brandy Thomas led all players with 21 points while collecting nine rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Emma Von Essen finished with seven points and four rebounds, and
Ally Knights was credited with three steals against the Tribe.
After an inauspicious first quarter that saw William & Mary take a 21-5 lead, Hofstra turned the game around with excellent defending, limiting William & Mary to no field goals and just two points from free throws. A Thomas layup at 8:32 started Hofstra's comeback attempt, but the Pride really got its offense going after the media timeout at 4:47. Thomas went to the line and sunk a pair of free throws after the timeout, and six straight Swint points made it an eight-point game with 3:04 left before halftime. As the Tribe offense couldn't find its shooting touch, Hofstra continued to whittle the host's lead with two Thomas free throws at 1:54 and a Von Essen jumper at 1:27 made the score 23-19 in favor of the home team.
Hofstra cut William & Mary's lead to one with a basket from Thomas at 8:54 and a Von Essen three pointer at 8:12 of the third quarter, but it would be the closest Hofstra came to taking the lead as the Tribe rattled off 13 straight points to lead by double-digits before Swint ended the scoring run with a tough two at the 5:09 mark. William & Mary upped its lead to 20 after the media timeout and they eventually led by as many as 23 points before Knights scored on a layup and
Alarice Gooden converted two free throws to make the score 52-33 going into the fourth quarter.
Despite shooting a game-high 53.3-percent from the floor in the fourth quarter, Hofstra couldn't recreate its successful second quarter as the Tribe kept Hofstra at bay to pick up the 19-point win over the Pride.
Sydney Wagner and Riley Casey led William & Mary with 18 points each, and Bre Bellamy scored 10 for the Tribe.
With the regular season concluded, Hofstra enters the 2023 CAA Championship as the #12-seed. They will face #13-seed UNCW (5-24, 2-16 CAA) in the First Round on Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. from SECU Arena in Towson, Maryland.
