Hofstra Rallies To Defeat William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - Anthony D'Onofrio's pinch hit two-run double in the seventh inning tied the game at three and Dylan Palmer followed with an RBI single to drive in the go ahead run as Hofstra rallied for a 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association victory over William & Mary Sunday afternoon at University Field. The win helped the Pride avoid a sweep at the hands of the Tribe in the three-game series.

Hofstra improved to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in conference action. William & Mary dropped to 11-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The Tribe scored three times in the third inning off Hofstra starter Brad Camarda as a leadoff walk and a hit batsman was followed by an RBI single from Ben Williamson. Following a double steal that put runners on second and third, Max Winters delivered a two-run single to extend the William & Mary lead to 3-0.

Hofstra was able to get a run back in the fourth as Kevin Bruggeman led off with a double, advanced to third on an infield out, and scored on an RBI groundout by Santino Rosso.

The score remained 3-1 until the seventh inning when the Pride rallied for three runs to take the lead. Brian Morrell led off the inning with a single and went to third on a pair of infield outs. Zach Bailey drew a four-pitch walk to bring up D'Onofrio in a pinch-hit role. The fifth-year outfielder drove an 0-1 pitch from Nate Knowles to the wall in right-center, narrowly missing a home run. But Morrell and Bailey were able to score to tie the game at three. Palmer followed by taking the first pitch he saw up the middle for a single. Pinch-runner Frankie DiMartino scampered in with the go-ahead run on the play.

Reliever Mike McKenna (1-0), who came on in the seventh inning, started the eighth for the Pride and retired the first batter before issuing back-to-back walks. That prompted a call to the bullpen for Michael O'Hanlon, who escaped the jam with a strikeout and a lineout to preserve the lead.

Hofstra threatened in the bottom of the eighth but left the bases loaded. The one-run lead was no problem for O'Hanlon in the ninth as he gave up a one-out single before inducing a game-ending double play to earn his second save.

Morrell had two hits on the day for the Pride, while Bruggeman, Bailey, Palmer, Will Kennedy, Matt Pelcher, and D'Onofrio each had one. Camarda went 6 ⅓ innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. McKenna struck out two batters in an inning, while O'Hanlon went the final 1 ⅔ innings and allowed a hit.

Knowles (1-2) took the loss for William & Mary after allowing three runs on four hits over three innings of relief. Williamson had a big day at the plate with three hits. Luca Danos added two hits for the Tribe.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday night at West Virginia. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
