Hofstra Bested By William & Mary In Pitcher's Duel

Hempstead, NY - John Mikolaicyk and Tristan Nemjo combined to scatter five hits and two runs over nine innings, however the William & Mary pitching staff allowed just one run as the Tribe came away with a 2-1 victory over Hofstra Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Hofstra slipped to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tribe improved to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in league action.

William & Mary scored a run in the third as Ben Williamson singled in Joe Delossantos, who had doubled. The Tribe scored an all important insurance run in the ninth as Lucas Carmichael led off with a single. Pinch runner Noah Zertuche went to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a groundout before scoring on a single up the middle from Tank Yaghoubi.

The run proved to be the difference as Hofstra staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Kevin Bruggeman reached on an error to start the half inning and went to third on a double in the right-center gap from Santino Rosso. A wild pitch from Rojo Prarie scored Bruggeman and sent the tying run to third with one out. But Prarie rebounded with a strikeout and then induced a ground ball for the final out to notch his third save of the season.

Zach Tsakounis (2-0) took the win for William & Mary, allowing no runs on two hits over four innings. Mike Weidinger threw three innings of one-hit relief before Prarie came on for the final two innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits.

Mikolaicyk (0-4) took the hard-luck loss after allowing a run on three hits over 5 ⅔ innings. Nemjo went the final 3 ⅓ and allowed a run on two hits.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m.

Notes:
-Will Kennedy and Dylan Palmer each had two hits for the Pride.
