Hofstra Drops Series Opener To William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - Carter Lovasz threw 4 ⅔ scoreless innings and Ben Williamson doubled and homered as William & Mary posted a 15-1 victory over Hofstra in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field. 

Hofstra fell to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in CAA action with the loss, while William & Mary upped its mark to 10-9 overall and 2-2 in league play. 

The Tribe built a 6-0 lead after four innings, scoring three times in the second, twice in the third and once in the fourth. Joe Delossantos had a two-run single for the Tribe in the second. In the third, the Tribe put runners on second and third and scored on a pair of infield singles. In the fourth, Williamson doubled home a run. 

William & Mary broke the game open with a six-run sixth with Williamson hitting a two-run home run and Tank Yahgoubi adding a two-run double. 

The Pride broke the shutout in the seventh as Zach Bailey blasted a solo home run to right field. Bailey went 2-2 on the afternoon. The Tribe added a pair of runs in the ninth to close out the scoring. 

Lovasz (1-1) allowed two hits and struck out five in his outing before yielding to Owen Pierce, who went 2 ⅓ innings and allowed a run on three hits. Noah Hertzler pitched the final two innings and allowed a hit with three strikeouts.

Hofstra starter Mark Faello (1-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over 4 ⅓ innings.

The teams continue the series Saturday with an 11 a.m. start time. 

Notes:
-The Pride received three hits from Ryan Morash and a pinch-hit single from Matt Pelcher.
-Brian Morrell made his first pitching appearance in a Hofstra uniform and threw ⅔ of an inning without allowing a run.
-Hofstra is 21-30 all-time against William & Mary.
-Landon Friedman made his season debut for Hofstra and allowed two runs on no hits and three walks in two innings. 
-The game was resumed Saturday morning after erroneoulsy being called after seven innings on Friday.
