Hofstra Downs Manhattan Behind Kelleher's Strong Relief And Potent Offense

Hempstead, NY - Danny Kelleher pitched four scoreless innings of relief and Santino Rosso paced a 16-hit offensive onslaught with four hits and three RBIs as Hofstra picked up an 11-4 victory over Manhattan Thursday afternoon at University Field.

Hofstra moved to 5-10 with the victory, while Manhattan slipped to 3-12 with the loss.

Hofstra sent eight men to the plate in a four-run first. Dylan Palmer led off with an infield single and then scored on a triple from Ryan Morash. Will Kennedy's infield single knocked in Morash with the Pride's second run. Brian Morrell would add an RBI double before Rosso closed the scoring with a single that chased home Morrell for a 4-0 lead.

The Pride added four more runs in the third, loading the bases on a single from Kevin Bruggeman, a double from Steve Harrington and an intentional walk to Morrell. That brought Rosso to the plate and the senior second baseman delivered a two-run double. Zach Bailey followed with a sacrifice fly and Anthony D'Onofrio added an RBI single.

The Jaspers had a four-run fifth as seven consecutive batters reached, all with two outs. Hofstra allowed just one hit in the inning as the Jaspers scored all four runs on either walks or hit batsmen. Kelleher came on to get the final out of the inning and then held the Jaspers off the board until being relieved with two outs in the top of the ninth. The junior righty gave up three hits and a pair of walks in his four innings to move to 1-0 on the season.

Hofstra added a run in the sixth as Morash singled, stole second, and came in on a pair of errors on the play. Morash would add a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Hofstra scored its final run on a wild pitch.

In addition to Rosso, four other Pride players had multiple-hit games with Bruggeman collecting three and Morash, Harrington, and Morrell getting two each.

Manhattan starter John Kwiatkowski (1-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits over three innings. Pete Durocher had two of the Jaspers' seven hits.

Hofstra will be back in action Friday at 2 p.m. when it welcomes William & Mary to University Field in the first game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series.
