Jaquan Carlos flirted with a triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, while
Tyler Thomas led all scorers with 18 points as the Hofstra men's basketball won its sixth consecutive game with a 72-53 win over Northeastern on Wednesday evening at Matthews Arena. Carlos was incredible as had zero turnovers in the game, while playing 35 minutes.
Aaron Estrada returned after missing the last game due to illness and contributed 13 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
Hofstra moved to 18-8 this season overall and 11-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Northeastern fell to 8-15 and 4-8 in league action. The Pride has now won 10 of its last 11 and 13 of its last 15 road games in conference play.
It was a hot start for Hofstra, and as usual it was started by Thomas, as he hit a three-pointer during a game-opening 7-0 run to put the Pride in front.
Darlinstone Dubar had the other four points during the spurt. The Pride, courtesy of a basket from Thomas, pushed the lead to eight (13-5) with 13:45 left in the opening half before Northeastern closed the gap. The Huskies used a 13-4 run to take a 18-17 lead with 8:17 showing on the first half clock. A pair of free throws from
Warren Williams put the Pride back in front and Estrada gave Hofstra an eight-point lead at the break with a jumper with 48 seconds left.
The Pride pushed the lead to double digits for the first time in the contest just under two minutes into the second stanza on a jumper from Estrada. A three-pointer by the Huskies closed the gap to six two minutes later, but Hofstra once again answered. The Pride used a 8-2 run to take a commanding 12-point advantage, 49-37, with 13:05 left in regulation. Northeastern got to within nine at 53-44 at the 9:21 mark but Hofstra pulled away and easily cruised to the 19-point victory.
Hofstra had a season-low in turnovers for the second consecutive game as they committed just five in the contest.
Jahmyl Telfort led Northeastern with 16 points, while Joe Pridgen had 13 rebounds for the Huskies.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Monmouth for a 2 p.m. contest. That game will air on FloHoops and SNY.
NOTES
- Hofstra is 29-25 all-time against Northeastern. The Pride has won six of the last eight meetings in the series.
- Tonight's game was the Pride's third appearance this season on the CBS Sports Network and Hofstra finished the regular season with a perfect 3-0 mark in those games.
- This marks the second straight year that Hofstra has had a win streak of six games and it is tied for the 32nd longest in program history.
