Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra men's basketball program earned its third Colonial Athletic Association regular season title in the past five seasons and captured its 11th consecutive win with an 84-52 victory over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Tyler Thomas led Hofstra with 23 points, while
Warren Williams added 19 points and nine rebounds.
As mentioned it is the Pride's third CAA regular season title in the last five years as Hofstra was the regular season champion in 2019-20 and 2018-19 as well. In addition, it is the program's fourth regular season title since 2015-16.
The 11-game win streak is tied for the sixth-longest in program history, tied with similar streaks in 1962-63, 1951-52, and 1947-48 to 1948-49. It is one of only nine streaks in program history of 11 games or more. In addition, it is the longest win streak at Hofstra since a 16-game streak during the 2018-19 campaign.
It was another fast start for Hofstra as the Pride led 5-0 after nearly two minutes of action courtesy of a
Aaron Estrada layup and a three-pointer from
Darlinstone Dubar. The lead would reach seven, 17-10, with 12:20 showing on the first half clock before Northeastern used an 11-3 run to earn a 21-20 advantage with 6:36 left in the opening stanza.
It would be all Hofstra the remainder of the first half and into the second half, though, as the Pride closed the first 20 minutes on an 18-4 run to lead 38-25 at the break.
The Pride would then score the first nine points of the second half to make it a 27-4 run in total as they opened up a 47-25 lead with 16:32 left in regulation. The lead reached 30 on a jumper from Thomas with 5:53 left that made it 73-42 and the Pride took its largest lead of the contest (78-44) with 4:23 left on another basket from Thomas.
Estrada finished with 16 points, five assists, and three rebounds in the game, while
Jaquan Carlos had eight assists for the Pride.
Nelson Boachie-Yiadom tied Williams for game-high honors with nine rebounds and also added four points and a game-high three blocked shots.
German Plotnikov had nine points, three rebounds, and three steals for the Pride.
Petey Galgano played the final two minutes on "Senior Day" and scored four points.
Chase Cormier had 12 points to lead Northeastern. Coleman Stucke added five points and six rebounds.
Hofstra will be the one seed in the upcoming CAA Championship and will first be in action on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m.
