Late Inning Heroics Once Again Lift Hofstra Past UAlbany

Hempstead, NY - While it did not happen in the bottom of the ninth inning like yesterday, the Hofstra University baseball team staged another late inning comeback to defeat the University at Albany, 11-8, Friday afternoon at University Field. The Pride scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 7-5 deficit and pick up the series win.

Hofstra moves to 2-4 on the season with its second consecutive win. The Great Danes dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

UAlbany led, 4-3, going into the bottom of the seventh before a two-run rally gave the Pride a one-run lead. Ryan Morash led off the half inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Liberatore. A single through the left side by Kevin Bruggeman pit runners on the corners and Brian Morrell cleared the bases with a double to right center that gave Hofstra a 5-4 advantage.

The Great Danes responded with three runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead. UAlbany loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and an infield single. A fielding error allowed the first run to score and tie the game before Chris Fisher's single through the left side gave the visitors the lead once again, 6-5. The Great Danes would get their final run on a double play grounder.

Hofstra would take advantage of UAlbany miscues in the bottom of the inning to plate six unearned runs. Zach Bailey led off the inning with a fly ball to right that was dropped for a three-base error. Anthony D'Onofrio followed with a single to left that made it a 7-6 game. After a pickoff and a strikeout, Morash started a two-out rally with a single, moving to third on a single from Liberatore. Bruggeman came through with a single that tied the game. After a double steal put runners on second and third, Morrell hit a slow chopper to third for a single that scored the go ahead run. However, the throw to first was wild and Bruggeman came in with an insurance run on the error to make it 9-7 in favor of the Pride. Santino Rosso kept the inning going with an infield single and then Will Kennedy doubled to the left-center gap to drive in two more runs for an 11-7 advantage. The Great Danes would push a run across in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Morrell was 4-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Pride, while Morash and Bruggeman each had three hits. Rosso had a pair of hits, while Kennedy drove in three runs. Brian Hart (1-0) was credited with the win in relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits in one inning of work.

Nick Jessen (0-1) took the loss for UAlbany, allowing eight runs (two earned) on 11 hits over three innings. Jason Bottari had three hits and two runs scored to pace the Great Danes. Will Feil had two hits and two RBIs.

The teams will conclude the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
