Hofstra's 16-Hit Outburst Leads Pride To Win Over UAlbany, Completes Series Sweep

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored in seven of eight innings and used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good in a 14-8 victory over UAlbany Sunday afternoon at University Field that completed a three-game series sweep. The Pride moved to 3-4 on the season with the win. 

The Great Danes (0-3) erased an early 3-0 deficit with six runs in the third inning. Will Feil and Owen Silliman had solo home runs in the inning, while Danny Alvarez had an RBI triple. Hofstra chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-5 game. Ryan Morash had an RBI single and Dylan Palmer scored the second on a double steal. 

Will Binder gave the Great Danes a two-run lead, 7-5, in the fourth with a solo home run, before the Pride stormed back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Brian Morrell led off the inning with a double and went to third on an infield single from Will Kennedy. A fielder's choice from Kevin Bruggeman drove in Morrell and Steve Harrington followed with a double off the wall in center field that scored Bruggeman with the tying run. Following a pitching change, Santino Rosso doubled to left center to put the Pride on top, 8-7. Rosso would later come in on a throwing error to make it a 9-7 game. 

UAlbany pushed a run across in the fifth inning but Bruggeman had an RBI double in the bottom of the inning and Rosso added a sacrifice fly to push the lead back to three. The Pride would add a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Harrington and two in the eighth off RBI singles from Morrell and Kennedy. 

Carlos Martinez (1-0) picked up his first career victory in relief for the Pride. The freshman allowed two runs on one hit over 3 ⅔ innings of work. Classmate Sean Hamilton threw two scoreless frames, while Zach Bailey struck out the side in a 1-2-3 ninth inning. 

Eight of Hofstra's nine starters had hits in the game with Kennedy collecting five in six trips and adding two RBIs. Morrell had three hits and two RBIs, while Bruggeman and Morash had two hits as well. Bruggeman added a pair of RBIs. Rosso knocked in three runs, with Harrington adding two RBIs. 

Joseph Tobia (0-1) took the loss for UAlbany, allowing three runs on four hits in ⅔ of an inning. Binder and Alvarez each had two hits on the day for the Great Danes. 

Hofstra returns to action Friday at Nevada with a 7:05 (EST) start time. 

Notes:
-Hofstra is 12-8 all-time versus UAlbany.
-Kennedy's five hits were a career best.
-Hofstra had 16 hits in the game, its third consecutive game with 12 or more hits.
-Palmer picked up his first career hit, an infield single in the second inning.
-Hofstra unveiled its 2022 CAA Championship banner in left field.
