Walk-Off Warriors; Hofstra Rallies Past UAlbany In Home Opener

Hempstead, NY - After winning nine games in walk-off fashion last season, the Hofstra University baseball team picked up right where they left off with a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the University at Albany Thursday in the Pride's home opener. Hofstra rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the eighth with two runs and scored twice more in the ninth to get the victory.

Hofstra moved to 1-4 on the season with the win, while the Great Danes slipped to 0-1.

Hofstra trailed 5-2 in the eighth inning before Jake Liberatore's two-run home run made it a one-run game going to the ninth. After Tristan Nemjo's second perfect inning of relief, the Pride came up to bat and wasted no time in starting a rally. Pinch-hitter Anthony D'Onofrio led off with a hard single up the middle and Ryan Morash followed with a single that sent pinch-runner Dylan Palmer to second. Following a double steal, Kevin Bruggeman singled in the tying run and sent Morash to third. An intentional walk to Will Kennedy loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice groundout resulted in an out at home but kept the bases loaded for Steve Harrington and the junior first baseman hit a sharp grounder to first that was knocked down by the UAlbany first baseman but his throw home was late as Bruggeman crossed home with the winning run.

Nemjo (1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out two batters in two hitless and scoreless frames. Hofstra starter Mark Faello went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts. Liberatore had a three-hit game for the Pride.

Great Danes reliever Owen Birkman (0-1) took the loss, allowing the two ninth inning runs on three hits. Will Binder and Jason Bottari each had two hits for UAlbany. Freshman Dylan Banner, the Diamond Award winner as the top player in Nassau County, started for UAlbany and allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

The teams continue the series Friday at 1 p.m.
