Florida Gulf Coast Rallies Past Pride

Fort Myers, FL - Nick Marrero had two hits and drove in two runs for Hofstra, but Florida Gulf Coast snapped a 4-4 tie with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 victory over the Pride in the series finale Sunday at Swanson Stadium. Hofstra fell to 0-4 with the loss while the Lancers improved to 4-0.

Florida Gulf Coast scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead before Hofstra rallied for a pair of runs to tie the game in the fourth. Kevin Bruggeman started the rally with a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. An infield single from Marrero put runners on the corners and ball four to Zach Bailey was a wild pitch that allowed Bruggeman to score the first run. Michael Florides followed with a single through the right side that plated Marrero with the tying run.

Hofstra would take the lead in the fifth as Jake Liberatore led off with a walk and went to third on Will Kennedy's double to left center. A one-out walk to Bruggeman loaded the bases and after the Lancers got the second out, Marrero came through with a two-out, two-run single through the right side that drove in a pair and gave the Pride a 4-2 advantage.

The lead was short-lived as Florida Gulf Coast knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Joe Kinker led off with a solo home run and later in the inning, Jake Mummau had an RBI triple. The Lancers would snap the tie in the sixth, loading the bases on three walks from Hofstra reliever Steven Kaenzig (0-1). Michael O'Hanlon came in and walked the first batter he faced to give FGCU the lead. A wild pitch allowed another run to score and Edrick Felix drove in the third run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

Hofstra would put a pair of runners on in the seventh but winning pitcher William Haberstock (1-0) escaped the jam. The Pride got a baserunner in the ninth but closer Connor O'Hara induced a game-ending double play to seal the win and notch his first save. Haberstock went 4 ⅓ innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Kinker and Alejandro Rodriguez each drove in two runs for the Lancers.

Kaenzig was charged with three runs in ⅔ of an inning. Hofstra starter Brad Camarda allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 ⅔ innings with four strikeouts.

Hofstra will return to action Friday afternoon when it hosts Albany in the Pride's home opener. Game time at University Field is set for 2 p.m.
