Hofstra Stuns #25 Vanderbilt; Pride Holds On After Opening Up Huge Lead

Nashville, TN - The sister act of Nikki and Taylor Mennella provided the scoring punch Saturday as the Hofstra women's lacrosse team knocked off No. 25 Vanderbilt, 11-8, at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

The victory was Hofstra's first over a ranked opponent since defeating Towson, 15-14, on May 1, 2021.

Nikki, a freshman, led the Pride (2-0) with a game-high five goals and two assists.  Taylor, a senior, added two goals and an assist.  Kemper Robinson scored four goals for Vanderbilt, which is in the midst of a four-game homestand to start the season.

Four others had at least one goal for the Pride, including one apiece from junior Chloe Sedlar and sophomore Megan Flannery, who each scored their first tallies of the season.

Senior Jess Smith made six of her game-high 11 saves in the second half.

Senior Katie Kelly added two assists, giving her six for the season.

The Pride, who never trailed, owned a pair of three-goal leads in the first half and led by as many as six, 9-3, with 5:36 left in the third quarter following back-to-back goals from Nikki and Taylor.  The five-goal third quarter was their second in as many games.

Vanderbilt got as close as two goals on two occasions in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Nancy Halleron, who entered today's contest with six goals in two games for Vanderbilt (1-2), was held scoreless.

Hofstra returns to James M. Shuart Stadium to face Brown Tuesday, February 21 at 2 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com.
