Fort Myers, FL - The Hofstra baseball team continued action in Fort Myers on Saturday as the Pride dropped a doubleheader to Florida Gulf Coast at Swanson Stadium, 7-2 and 10-7.
Game 1: FGCU 7, Hofstra 2
FGCU (3-0) scored two runs in the second inning to get the scoring going as Jacob Lojewski delivered a two-out, two RBI single to give the Eagles an early 2-0 advantage. FGCU added one more run in the third and two more runs in the fourth before Hofstra (0-3) finally broke through in the fifth when
Zach Bailey launched a solo home run to left field.
Nick Marrero kept the rally going with a double down the left field line, before
Ryan Morash drove a single to right, giving Hofstra its second run of the game and cutting the Eagle advantage to three.
FGCU added two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing the score to 7-2 to wrap up the seven-inning contest.
Cade Henry took the loss for Hofstra, pitching 3.1 innings, striking out three. Mason Miller earned the win on the mound for FGCU.
Game 2: FGCU 10, Hofstra 7
This time, it was Hofstra plating the first two runs of the game, as
Steve Harrington scored on a wild pitch and
Jake Liberatore crossed home on a
Santino Rosso sacrifice fly, giving the Pride a 2-0 lead in the second. FGCU responded with an RBI groundout to make it a 2-1 game.
Hofstra got one run back in the fourth when
Will Kennedy led off with a solo shot to right-center, but FGCU re-gained control an inning later with eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, bringing the score to 9-3.
Bailey came through for the Pride in the seventh and eighth innings as the first baseman plated Liberatore with a sacrifice fly in the seventh before ripping a two-run, two-out single in the eighth, shrinking the Eagle lead to two runs, 9-7. In all, Hofstra scored three runs on three hits in the eighth to bring it back within a pair of runs. Despite the Hofstra rally, FGCU responded with another run in the bottom of the eighth, capping the score at 10-7.
Kennedy finished the outing 2-for-5 with a home run, while Liberatore also scattered a pair of hits while scoring three times. Bailey drove in a team-high three runs.
John Mikolaicyk pitched five innings, striking out five while surrendering six hits. Nick Love earned the decision for FGCU while LJ McDonough registered the save.
Hofstra closes out its trip to Fort Myers tomorrow, Sunday, February 19, with another matchup versus FGCU at 12 p.m.
