Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Stephen Gorchov

Pride Battles, But Falls At Saint Louis

St. Louis, MO - Tyler Thomas had a game-high 29 points, but Saint Louis was able to hold off the Pride down the stretch as the Billikens earned a 71-68 victory over the Hofstra men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.

Darlinstone Dubar had his third straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pride.

Hofstra dropped to 6-3 with the loss and saw its five-game win streak come to an end. Saint Louis improved to 6-5 with the victory.

An early five-point lead for Hofstra following a Bryce Washington steal and layup forced Saint Louis into a timeout just 3:19 into the contest. Silas Sunday pushed the advantage to seven, 10-3, as he put home a dunk at the 15:19 mark. The lead would be two for the Pride, 16-14, until Hofstra used an 11-2 run to make it 27-16 as Thomas drained a three-pointer at the 6:46 mark. The Billikens gradually chipped away at the deficit and after tying the game at 29, two free throws from Thomas gave the visitors the halftime lead.

A Dubar three-pointer at the 17:26 mark pushed the lead back to five for the Pride, which would expand it to five on multiple other occasions in the second half.

A layup from Dubar with 8:14 remaining would make it 55-50 in favor of Hofstra as both teams had answers. Saint Louis used an 8-2 run to retake the lead at 58-57 with 6:05 left. Trailing by two, 64-62, Thomas would score six consecutive Pride points down the stretch, including giving Hofstra a 68-67 lead with 1:22 showing on the clock. It was not to be, though, as Terrence Hargrove Jr. gave Saint Louis the lead for good with a basket with 47 seconds left and the Billikens tacked on two free throws in the final 10 seconds to account for the final margin.

Jaquan Carlos added 11 points and eight assists for the Pride.

Tim Dalger had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists for Saint Louis, which also got 19 points and seven rebounds from Hargrove Jr.

Hofstra finishes up its three-game road swing on Tuesday when it travels to #22 Duke for a 7 p.m. contest. That game will air nationally on ESPN2.
