Dubar, Thomas Lead Hofstra In Loss At No. 21 Duke

Durham, NC - Darlinstone Dubar scored 24 points and Tyler Thomas added 18, but No. 21 Duke pulled away in the second half in an 89-68 victory over the Pride at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday night. Hofstra slipped to 6-4 on the season with the loss, while the Blue Devils improved to 7-3 with the win.

Dubar had 17 of his 24 points in the first half, shot 8-13 from the floor and was 7-11 from three-point range. He also added a team-best eight rebounds. Thomas shot 8-16 from the floor and had three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jaquan Carlos had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Jacco Fritz chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, and two blocks. 

The Pride and Blue Devils went toe-to-toe in the opening minutes of the first half with the score tied as seven at the first media timeout. Duke would take a 16-10 lead with 13:28 to play in the half before the Pride used a 10-3 run to take a 20-19 lead with 11:17 on the clock. Dubar had six points in the spurt, while Fritz had the other four. Trailing 32-31, Dubar and Thomas would connect on back-to-back three-pointers to give the Pride a 37-32 advantage with 3:56 to go before the half. Coming out of a timeout, Duke's Kyle Filipowski scored five unanswered points to tie the score at 37 with 2:28 remaining. Hofstra went back up by two on a Dubar basket, but the Blue Devils closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a 44-39 lead into the locker room at the half. Both teams shot well in the half with Hofstra at 51.7 percent (15-29), while Duke shot 62.1 percent (18-29). 

Duke started the second half on an 11-4 run over the first four minutes to open a 55-43 lead. Dubar's sixth three-pointer of the game cut the Pride's deficit to nine, 55-46. Another run (9-2) by the Blue Devils gave them a 64-48 with 11:45 remaining. Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run to get within nine, 64-55, as Thomas had four points and Dubar three. However, Duke scored 12 straight points to extend its lead to 21 points, 76-55, with 6:33 to play and the Pride would not get closer than 17 points, 76-59, the rest of the way as Duke led by as many as 26 (87-61). 

Filipowski led the Blue Devils with 28 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists. Jeremy Roach had 19 points and eight assists, while Mark Mitchell had 14 points and six rebounds. Jared McCain also scored in double-figures for Duke with 13 points. 

Hofstra returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Norfolk State at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
