Hofstra Edges Iona for Fifth Straight Win

New Rochelle, NY – The Hofstra men's basketball team held off a late charge by Iona before winning, 62-57, over the Gaels for its fifth straight win of the season from the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, New York.

Hofstra improves to 6-2 on the year with the win, its first road win against Iona since February 23, 2008. Iona falls to 3-6.

With a team-leading 12 points and 10 rebounds, Darlinstone Dubar tallied his second straight double-double. Jaquan Carlos and Bryce Washington both scored 11 points against Iona, while Carlos added seven assists.

The Pride opened a six-point lead to start the contest before Iona drilled back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to even the score at 8-8, but Hofstra pulled back in front on a Jacco Fritz layup. Ahead by three with 10:24 remaining in the half, a trey by Carlos jumpstarted a 7-0 run that put the guests in front by 10. Iona battled back to make it a four-point game, but Hofstra set the margin back to 10 with three-pointers by Washington and Griffin Barrouk. The Gaels rallied for the final eight points of the half to trail by two.

Hofstra started the second half with a 9-2 run to lead by nine before Washington sunk a three after an Iona basket made it a 10-point deficit. The Pride's lead grew to as many as 11 points in the second half before the Gaels whittled away at the margin. The hosts came as close as four points away from tying the game late, but Carlos sunk two free throws inside the final 30 seconds, and KiJan Robinson connected on one of two from the charity stripe to seal the win.

Iona was led by 15 points from Wheza Panzo, and Jean Aranguren recorded a team-best eight rebounds.

Hofstra continues its three-game road swing on Saturday when it travels to St. Louis for a 2 p.m. (local) game. The contest will air on ESPN+.
