Brooke Anya set new career-highs in points and rebounding as the Hofstra women's basketball team picked up a 58-49 win over Howard from Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
Hofstra improves to 6-4 overall with the win, and Howard sees its record drop to 2-11.
Anya recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and
Emma Von Essen posted a game-high 18 points for the Pride.
Ally Knights and
Sorelle Ineza each dished out four assists for the Pride, and Anya recorded three of Hofstra's seven steals.
After Howard hit the opening basket, Hofstra jumped out to a four-point lead on back-to-back threes by Knights and Von Essen.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard sunk a jumper to give Hofstra a 8-5 lead, but the Bison scored four straight points to pull ahead by one before Anya scored her first points, putting the Pride back in front by one with 1:55 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded the lead down the stretch before Howard scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 17-12.
Hofstra took a two-point lead thanks to a 9-2 run to open the second quarter, but Howard responded with a three-pointer at 6:31 to retake the lead. Howard led by two on a three-point play with 5:26, but the Pride rattled off eight of the final 10 points of the quarter to lead by four at halftime.
Selma Markisic tied the score at 25-all with a second chance basket, and the Pride pulled in front after a three from
Micaela Carter. Free throws by Knights and
Tionna Baker put the Pride on top 31-27 going into the break.
Hofstra's lead grew to eight points following a layup and two free throws by Anya before Howard made it a six-point game with a pair of free throws. Hofstra grew its lead to 13 with a 9-2 run lasting four minutes and 32 seconds, before the Bison ended the quarter with three free throws to cut Hofstra's lead to 10. The Pride was outscored 15-14 by Howard in the fourth quarter, but Hofstra staved off Howard's comeback attempt to pick up its second road win of the season.
Iyanna Warren finished as Howard's leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Kaiya Creek with 12 points.
The Pride concludes its non-conference schedule on New Year's Eve with a 1 p.m. contest against Manhattan from the Mack Sports Complex.
