Hempstead, NY -
Tyler Thomas had 22 points and
Jaquan Carlos added 10 points and 10 assists as the Hofstra men's basketball team dominated the second half en route to a 74-58 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The double-double was the third of the career for Carlos (second this season) and the fourth time in his career he has tallied 10 or more assists in a game. Thomas has now scored 20 or more points 20 times in his career at Hofstra and eight times this season.
The Pride controlled the second stanza, outscoring the Spartans 43-26 in the final 20 minutes.
Hofstra upped its record to 7-4 this season, while Norfolk State is now 7-5 this year. The Pride improved to 3-1 this season at the Mack Sports Complex and 67-17 at home since 2017-18.
It was Norfolk State who jumped out to the early lead, holding a 9-3 advantage four minutes into the contest. The Pride answered, though, and used an 11-4 run to take a 14-13 lead following a three-pointer from Thomas. The Spartans would open up a seven-point lead with just over six minutes left in the opening half before Hofstra rallied and closed the gap to one thanks to another Thomas three-pointer with 1:29 left before intermission.
Trailing by one at the break, Hofstra stormed out of the gates and scored 10 of the first 11 points in the second half to open up a 41-33 lead. Norfolk State was able to recover and retake the lead, 42-41, with 14:44 left before the Pride's game-changing run.
With the game knotted at 44-44, Hofstra used a 14-1 run to take complete control and lead 58-45 with 11:31 showing on the clock. Thomas had a pair of three-pointers during the spurt to key the run for the Pride. Hofstra would never seriously be challenged the rest of the way as they went on to tally the 16-point victory.
Darlinstone Dubar and
Bryce Washington each had 13 points for the Pride, with Dubar adding a team-best seven rebounds.
Jamarii Thomas had 17 points, six rebounds, and seven assists for Norfolk State, which also got 15 points from Christian Ings.
