Washington, DC -
Tyler Thomas had 20 points and eight rebounds and
Darlinstone Dubar added 17 points, but George Washington answered a Pride run in the second half with a huge run of their own to earn a 71-60 victory over the Hofstra men's basketball team on Tuesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
KiJan Robinson was also in double figures for the Pride with 10 points.
The loss puts Hofstra's record at 1-2 this season, while George Washington improved to 3-0.
After George Washington scored the game's first six points, Thomas hit a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around a
Jaquan Carlos basket to even the score at eight early on. The Pride battled back from several first half deficits to keep the game within striking distance. Thomas led Hofstra with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Trailing 44-38 with just over four minutes expired in the second stanza, Hofstra used a 15-5 run to take a 53-49 lead following a basket from Dubar with 9:35 showing on the clock. A three-pointer from
German Plotnikov put the Pride in front during the run, while Thomas tallied six of Hofstra's 15 points.
GW would take control, though, and used a 20-2 run that eventually put the home team in front, 69-55, with 3:30 left in regulation. That would prove to be enough for GW as the Pride could get no closer than 11 in the final minute.
James Bishop IV led GW with 17 points, while Garrett Johnson tallied 15 points and eight rebounds.
Hofstra returns to action next Monday when it takes on Buffalo in the Pride's opening game at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will air on FloHoops.
