Hempstead, NY -
Darlinstone Dubar led Hofstra with 18 points and six rebounds, but Princeton held the Pride at bay much of the second half as they defeated the Hofstra men's basketball team, 74-67, on Friday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex before a crowd of 3,217.
Hofstra moves to 1-1 on the season, while Princeton improves to 2-0.
The Pride scored the game's first four points and led 16-9 following a three-pointer from
Tyler Thomas with 10:39 left before intermission. Princeton immediately responded, though, and used a 13-0 scoring run to open up a 22-16 lead with 7:02 left in the opening stanza. Hofstra battled back to take a one-point lead on a jumper from
Bryce Washington with 1:34 left before the Tigers tallied two free throws to account for the halftime lead.
Dubar opened the second half scoring to put the Pride back in front, but the visitors used a 12-2 run to take a 42-33 lead following a three-pointer from Blake Peters. Hofstra was able to close the gap to four, 45-41, at the 13:28 mark before Princeton pushed the lead back to 12.
Hofstra attempted a late run and was able to make it a five-point game with just under two minutes left after a basket from
Tyler Thomas and two free throws from Dubar. That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as the Tigers went 7-7 from the free throw line down the stretch.
Jaquan Carlos finished with 11 points and a game-high nine assists for the Pride, while Thomas added 13 points.
Caden Pierce had 26 points and 15 rebounds for Princeton, which also got 15 points from Peters, 14 from Xaivian Lee, and 13 from Matt Allocco.
Hofstra is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to George Washington for a 7 p.m. game.
