Late Goldthorp Goal Lifts #16 Hofstra Over Monmouth in Key CAA Contest

Hempstead, NY – In a battle between two of the top teams in the Coastal Athletic Association, it was the 16th-ranked Hofstra men's soccer team who prevailed with a 1-0 home win over Monmouth on a chilly Saturday evening from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Now unbeaten in 11 consecutive games, Hofstra improves to 9-1-3 overall and 3-0-2 in CAA play. Monmouth falls to 5-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 against conference competition.

Eliot Goldthorp bagged his sixth goal of the season with under five minutes remaining in regulation to put Hofstra ahead of the Hawks. Goldthorp collected a loose ball and drove right down the middle of the Monmouth defense, skipping and gliding past several challenges. He unleashed a hard shot low and to the right of Monmouth goalkeeper Eryk Dymora and in for the go-ahead goal with 4:23 to go in the contest.

Wessel Speel was called into action throughout the match with five, but he was especially active in the second half with four stops against the Hawks.

Hofstra held a 16-10 edge over Monmouth in shots, with only three coming on frame. Dymora made two saves on the night for the Hawks.

Hofstra will stay local for its next contest, a 7 p.m. road game against Fordham on Tuesday.
