Hofstra Falls to Monmouth in CAA Finale

West Long Branch, NJ – The 2023 CAA season comes to a close for the Hofstra field hockey team in West Long Branch, New Jersey with a 2-1 defeat to CAA-leading Monmouth. The Pride's record now stands at 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the CAA, and Monmouth is 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the CAA, winning its second consecutive CAA regular season title.

Jaime Lewis got Hofstra off on the right foot with a goal inside the first four minutes of the contest. Lewis fed the ball to an unmarked Simryn Desai just outside the shooting arc, and Desai moved into the arc before sending a hard shot on goal. Lewis maneuvered her stick into the path of the oncoming ball and deflected it past Monmouth goalie Jessie Eiselin for the opening tally on the first shot of the contest. Hofstra's defense clamped down and Pieke Roos stood tall yet again with six first-half saves, including five in the second quarter, as the Pride carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Monmouth's Johanna Karlhuber evened the score on a penalty stroke within the opening minutes of the third quarter. The home side pulled in front for good with a tally from league-leading scorer Sofia Fouces early in the fourth quarter.

Hofstra concludes its 2023 season at home on Sunday, October 29, against Rider. Prior to the 1 p.m. start, the Hofstra field hockey program will honor five departing seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
