Hofstra Blanks Drexel, Clinch CAA Championship Berth

Hempstead, NY - Ryan Carmichael scored his 11th goal of the season and Wessel Speel made five saves as Hofstra defeated Drexel, 1-0, Saturday night in a Coastal Athletic Association game at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win moved the Pride into a first-place tie in the CAA standings and clinched a berth in the upcoming CAA Championship for the 12th consecutive season.

Hofstra moved to 10-3-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the CAA with the victory. The Pride snapped a two-game losing streak as well. Drexel dipped to 8-2-4 overall and 3-2-3 in league action. The loss ended a 10-game unbeaten streak for the Dragons.

Carmichael put the Pride on the board at the 24:37 mark, sending a right-footed shot from inside the box into the lower left corner. Eliot Goldthorp and Albert Kang were credited with assists on the goal.

Speel and the Hofstra defense did the rest to make the goal stand. The senior goalkeeper made four saves in the final 45 minutes including one on a dangerous free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and another on a close range redirection late in the contest. The Pride defense limited the number of good opportunities, although the Dragons did have nine second half shots.

Alessandro Capogna stopped three shots for the Dragons.

Hofstra will look to lock up a top two seed in the CAA Championship next Saturday when it plays its regular season finale at Northeastern with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
