Hofstra Battles in Overtime Defeat to Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT – The Hofstra field hockey team battled back from deficits twice against hosts Quinnipiac, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats won 3-2 in overtime from Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The loss in non-conference competition puts Hofstra at 5-9 overall, and Quinnipiac improves to 6-7 overall.

The Bobcats opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal by Julianna Cappello off a pass from Lucia Pompeo 4:52 into the quarter, but Hofstra answered minutes later with a goal of their own by captain Tara McNally. On a penalty corner, McNally weaved her way through the Quinnipiac defense and into prime shooting space, and she lifted her shot over goalie Cristina Torres with 7:47 remaining before halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Quinnipiac pulled back in front off a tally from Micaela Grajales off a Bobcat penalty corner with 3:06 remaining. But on Hofstra's next possession, Silvia Vetter got her stick to a long pass from a teammate and she redirected the ball past Torres and in for the tying goal with under three minutes left in regulation before the horn sounded, sending Hofstra to its fourth overtime game of the season. Quinnipiac ended the game two minutes into the extra period, with Big East Preseason Midfielder of the Year Stella Tegtmeier scoring the winner.

Pieke Roos finished the day with five saves for the Pride. Lauren Lucas finished with a team-leading two shots, while Lucas, McNally, and Vetter all finished with one shot on goal apiece.

Torres made two saves in the overtime win for the Bobcats. Tegtmeier and Pompeo each had six shots for the home side. Pompeo, Katie Shanahan, and Kate Zamagni all tallied assists for Quinnipiac.

Hofstra's road trip continues on Friday, October 20, with a 3 p.m. contest against CAA foe Northeastern.
