Hampton, VA - The Hofstra men's basketball team placed four players in double figures, but it was the defense that stood tall tonight as the Pride captured a 67-51 road win over Hampton on Thursday evening at the Hampton University Convocation Center. The 51 points were the second-fewest Hofstra has allowed in a game this season and the fewest this season against an NCAA Division I opponent.
Aaron Estrada led Hofstra with 20 points and also added seven rebounds and five assists.
Hofstra upped its record to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Both conference wins have come on the road for the Pride. Hampton drops to 3-12 and 0-3 with the loss.
It was a quick 6-0 lead for Hofstra after Estrada and
Tyler Thomas opened with three-pointers for the Pride in the game's first 75 seconds. Leading 13-11, Hofstra would take its first double-digit lead of the game as they scored eight straight, culminating with a
German Plotnikov three-pointer to make it 21-11 with 11:10 left in the opening stanza. A 12–4 Pride run pushed the lead to 37-20 later in the half before Thomas closed the first half scoring and allowed the Pride to take a 39-23 lead into the locker room.
Hofstra was in control the majority of the second half but Hampton did make a run. The Pride would lead 43-25 at the 16:27 mark before the Pirates got the deficit into single digits with a 12-2 run that made it 45-37 with 11:11 left after a Deuce Russell three-pointer. Estrada stepped up, though, and immediately answered with a three-pointer of his own on the next possession.
The Pirates got to within nine once more in the game but an Estrada jumper and a free throw from Dubar pushed the lead back to a dozen with just over nine minutes left and Hofstra would pull away down the stretch for the road victory.
Thomas was second on the team with 16 points, while
Darlinstone Dubar tallied 13 points and tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds. The Pride centers played a big role in the game as
Warren Williams tied his season-high with 12 points and added six rebounds, while
Nelson Boachie-Yiadom had a career-high tying five assists and five rebounds.
Jordan Nesbitt led Hampton with 14 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Kyrese Mullen added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pirates.
Hofstra continues the road trip at William & Mary on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip. That game will air on FloHoops.
